Why exactly do the British say lieutenant as ”leftenant”
Why exactly do the British say lieutenant as ‘leftenant’? Mark Dallas, London UK The word was originally two Latin terms, “locum” meaning in place of, and “teneris” meaning holding, together the phrase applied to anyone “holding in place of” someone else. Over time the word “locum” evolved into the French word “lieu”, which is pronounced in French as it is spelled.
Editor’s note – This article is a reader’s opinion of life in Spain, it is not shared by us but it does represent the thinking of many people who currently live in Spain or of those who have subsequently moved back to their home country.. We do encourage you to carefully consider your decision in advance. Remember that many expats absolutely love living in Spain.
Just a few words that are different or have several meanings can be manipulated to entrap another person. What appears to be innocent can in fact be quite sinister. So what am I talking about? I am talking about how my wife and I became caught up in something that we had thought would enhance our sex-lives and instead how it changed our lives but not for the better. Maybe I should explain. Jan and I have been together since high school.
She was a freshman and I was a senior when we met. She was 14 and I was seventeen when we began dating. I ended up being her first lover and she was my third. We stayed together until she finished high school but took a break or hiatus from our relationship for 2 years when she started college and I was studying and working.
It was a tearful but agreeable breakup.

I know you say most men are marriage-minded underneath but they seem much less interested in getting into a stable, committed relationship than women do, and seem to drag their heels. Some of the things I hate about being single are in no particular order: Surely these things apply to men just as much as women? Your insights would be much appreciated. I particularly love your list of what sucks about being single.
my husband makes fun of me when i say “yah, hey!” a lot of times my accent shows and i’ll forget where i am and i’ll say it. we like to talk about the time we were driving on the freeway and it started to rain really hard and my husband said, “wow, it’s raining really hard!” and i said, “yah, hey!” he looked at me and laughed, “do you realize what you just said?” and i.

When I got there it only took minutes for one of them to tell me I suit the ghetto. In a strange way I was honored. I agreed without hesitation, not knowing what I was in for. Its public health department conducted three years of psychological profiles on adult men and women for the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, They were questioned on their relationships, levels of intimacy, overall satisfaction, closeness to their partner, how often they thought of breaking up, commitment and depression.
Actress Jennifer Aniston and former husband Brad Pitt in , but they too didn’t last How close they are to their partner was measured in a test commonly used by psychologists which is called ‘Inclusion of Other in Self’. It looks at how much two people share personality traits, values, identity and points of view among other aspects of their life together. Added together, researchers claim they could use the information to compare the closeness of couples against their happiness and the strength of their relationship.
The couples with the strongest relationships were those that were neither the closest nor the most distant but somewhere in between. Tellingly, these couples knew they were not as close as they could be but they were happier this way, said lead author Professor David Frost. And the concept could be extended beyond romantic relationships and into those between parents and children, co-workers or simply friends, he said.

Posted on March 3, by Scott Alexander I have heard the following from a bunch of people, one of whom was me six months ago: They seem to be saying things that are either morally repugnant or utterly ridiculous. And just as well try to give a quick summary of the sweeping elegaic paeans to a bygone age of high culture and noble virtues that is Reaction. But there is some content, and some of it is disconcerting.
I started reading a little about Reaction after incessantly being sent links to various Mencius Moldbug posts, and then started hanging out in an IRC channel with a few Reactionaries including the infamous Konkvistador whom I could question about it. Obviously this makes me the world expert who is completely qualified to embark on the hitherto unattempted project of explaining it to everyone else. Trying to sum up their ideas seems like a good way to first of all get a reference point for what their ideas are, and second of all to make it clearer why I think they deserve a rebuttal.
I have tried to be charitable towards these ideas, which means this post will be pushing politically incorrect and offensive positions. If you do not want to read it, especially the middle parts which are about race, I would totally understand that. But if you do read it and accuse me of holding these ideas myself and get really angry, then you fail at reading comprehension forever. I originally planned to follow this up tomorrow with the post containing my arguments against these positions, but this argument took longer than I thought to write and I expect the counterargument will as well.
Expect a post critiquing reactionary ideas sometime in the next…week? This is the post where I argue that modern society is rotten to the core, and that the only reasonable solution is to dig up King James II, clone him, and give the clone absolute control over everything. The imperial Chinese thought nothing could beat imperial China, the medieval Spaniards thought medieval Spain was a singularly impressive example of perfection, and Communist Soviets were pretty big on Soviet Communism.
Share All rated the participants as more attractive when they wore the heels. Researchers used a process known as point-light display, in which lit markers are placed around the body. Scientists at the University of Portsmouth found that women wearing heels were rated as more attractive than when wearing flat shoes Victoria Beckham has long been extolling the benefits of wearing heels and is rarely seen without them It means the face and torso of each of the 12 participants were obscured, so the viewer could only see patterns of light.
In a second experiment, the viewing group were asked to judge whether the video showed a man or a woman walking towards them. When the women wore flat shoes they were nearly twice as likely to be viewed as a man.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian.
Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date. Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going.
If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart.

Language gatekeepers — often self-appointed — judge how we speak. John Fought explains how linguists try to help us be language-neutral. Read Summary As we go about our lives, we move in and out of many social groups, each associated with specific places and characteristic activities — school, work, family, shopping, worship, soccer and more.
For each of us, this dense network of associations formsour society. Every detail of our selves and our lives — our appearance, speech, activities and associations — is perceived by others as an emblem of who we were, what we have become and where we fit in. The social profile of each person is recognizable and unique, like a fingerprint.
The ways we speak also reflect this combination of social similarity and diversity in fine detail. Our speech reflects national, regional, occupational and educational differences among others via complex differences in accent, vocabulary and grammar. Our language is both a tool for communication and a part of our personal image, like our physical appearance, behavior and belongings.
Language helps signify who we are in society Language has always helped to signify who we are in society, sometimes serving as a basis for exclusion. Societies use shibboleths in many ways. Indeed, speech is a convenient stand-in for other kinds of stigma that we recognize but do not openly acknowledge. For example, in our society, discrimination based on appearance, race, sex, religion or national origin is TABOO and often illegal, whereas discrimination based on particular details of language use by men or women, people of different religions, people from other countries and so on is often allowed.
