Email Bob Jones University is apologizing for racist policies that included a one-time ban on interracial dating and its unwillingness to admit black students until In a statement posted Thursday on its Web site , the fundamentalist Christian school founded in in northwestern South Carolina says its rules on race were shaped by culture instead of the Bible. The university says president Stephen Jones decided to issue the apology because he still receives questions about the school’s views on race. In the statement, BJU said that it was founded to help young men and women cultivate a Biblical worldview, and to represent Christ and his teachings to others, “in every dimension of life. For almost two centuries American Christianity, including BJU in its early stages, was characterized by the segregationist ethos of American culture. Consequently, for far too long, we allowed institutional policies regarding race to be shaped more directly by that ethos than by the principles and precepts of the Scriptures. We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it.
Please excuse the fact that I am unable to keep these posts in order. A reader who takes the time to read all the posts in order will gain great insight into the thinking and duplicity of Dr. Quotes of the Day: Back in , Bob Jones Junior spoke about race in chapel. Email Criticism following Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush’s visit to Bob Jones University has led the school to drop its controversial ban on interracial dating. Jones told King that the school had no Bible verse to support its ban, and that it was “an insignificant” part of the school’s stance against a one-world order. Jones said the blending of worldwide governments, ethnic groups and religions would signal the coming of the Antichrist and so the school stands against that.
It’s so significant to the world at large, the media in particular, why should we have this thing here as an obstacle? During Bush’s appearance at the fundamentalist Christian school last month, the Texas governor told his audience that he shared their views. Bush later apologized for failing to criticize the school’s anti-Catholic views and racial policies during his visit to the Greenville, S. The university has made the right decision. Earlier Friday, the university used full-page newspaper advertisements in USA Today and South Carolina’s largest newspapers to answer some of the national criticism directed at it.
I think that’s the shining truth that will come through. It has long established itself as a bastion of fundamentalism.

Billy Graham , One of the earliest controversies to center about BJU was the break that occurred in the late s between separatist fundamentalists and neo-evangelicals represented by the newly prominent evangelist Billy Graham. Graham had briefly attended Bob Jones College, and the University conferred an honorary degree on him in Billy approves them, Billy condones them, Billy recommends them I think that Dr.
Graham is doing more harm in the cause of Jesus Christ than any living man; that he is leading foolish and untaught Christians, simple people that do not know the Word of God, into disobedience to the Word of God.
It is with great joy that we greet the abandonment of Bob Jones University’s most controversial ban: “There is to be no interracial dating.” Bob Jones III announced the change March 3 on Larry.
Conspirator Jeff P In looking through the handbook, they do a pretty good job of developing school policy to minimize or eliminate any hanky-panky between boys and girls. Have some respect for the English language! Also, what everyone else said. Pretty sure he was being sarcastic… get with the program. Would they just not be allowed to date? How did they enforce it?

It teaches that God created the human race as one race. History, reality and Scripture affirm that in that act of creation was the potential for great diversity, manifested today by the remarkable racial and cultural diversity of humanity. Scripture also teaches that this beautiful, God-caused and sustained diversity is divinely intended to incline mankind to seek the Lord and depend on Him for salvation from sin Acts The true unity of humanity is found only through faith in Christ alone for salvation from sin—in contrast to the superficial unity found in humanistic philosophies or political points of view.
For those made new in Christ, all sinful social, cultural and racial barriers are erased Colossians 3:

RNS When Bob Jones III recently questioned whether President Obama is a Christian, it was a reminder not only that the fundamentalist leader is controversial but also how little the political world has heard from the man and the rock-ribbed Christian school that bears his name. The relative silence emanating from Bob Jones University is all the more remarkable given the intensity of the Republican primary in South Carolina, and the power that the religious right here holds.
In many ways, the school is still recovering from the campaign, when George W. Bush spoke without mentioning the school’s ban on interracial dating. Bush got hammered for the lapse as well as staying mum on the school’s view of Catholicism as a “cult” and apologized. The university has since dropped the interracial dating ban, but candidates have tended to avoid the campus. So far this year, the closest any candidate has come is Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose wife Anita made a low-key lunchtime visit to nursing students in mid-October.
That’s a sea change for a university that has been a must-stop venue for every Republican since Ronald Reagan. But there’s another, perhaps more consequential reason for the school’s muted political voice:

From its inception, BJU has been located in the South “but has never had a predominantly southern constituency. Other states with large representations in the student body are Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio. The institution moved into its initial 25 buildings during the school year. Additional buildings have been constructed on an average of more than one per year, and most have been faced with light yellow brick similar to that chosen for the original buildings.
According to David Steel, curator of European art at the North Carolina Museum of Art , Erin Jones “brought that museum into the modern era,” employing “a top-notch curator, John Nolan,” and following “best practices in conservation and restoration.
Bob Jones University (BJU) is a private, non-denominational Evangelical university in Greenville, South Carolina, United States, known for its conservative cultural and religious positions.
This same pastor also contrived a plan for her to go away from her home to Colorado to live with a family there, and quietly have the baby who was the product of that rape she put the baby up for adoption, which may or may not have been her choice, that is unknown. He then later stated that the university is not anti-Catholic or Mormon, but said “Our shame would be in telling people a lie, and thereby letting them go to hell without Christ because we loved their goodwill more than we loved them and their souls”.
BJU didn’t not admit black students until , and until the year , BJU did not allow students of different races to date or marry. Bush to the campus that same year caused a firestorm of controversy after their policy become well known in the media. Bush’s staff had to have known about this policy at the time of his visit, and maybe even the former President himself, but the visit went on anyway. Bob Jones University has apparently become a bit more open minded on race, and is becoming less political under it’s new president, Stephen Jones.
